Gillian Smith
Art and music, colour and sound, have always been a passion for Gillian. Demonstrating talent as a child to draw, colour and work with clay she continued art through her senior years of schooling. A trained musician, she was inspired to explore the relationship between colour and sound by her university lecturer Pamela Page who enjoyed performing while being surrounded by works she had painted to depict the pieces she was performing. After completing an initial degree in piano performance Gillian began a Master's degree before deciding to complete a postgraduate education degree. At the end of 2003 she resigned from full time teaching and through the encouragement of her friends, and husband David, began painting.
Her energetic approach to life is reflected in her art through a love of colour, texture and movement. Originally showing a preference for oils she has recently begun exploring acrylics which lend themselves to her love of layers and patterns. It is possibly the development of her kinaesthetic skills which lead to the creation of works that “move” or “want to be touched”. Gillian draws inspiration from moments, personal interests, images or memories of her life.
