Robert Andrews is a Brisbane-based visual artist. He mainly creates paintings and assemblages, which are responses to aspects of the urban environment – shapes, surfaces, textures and spatial relationships all play a role in the creation of these artworks. So too does a series of perceived opposites – abstraction and representation, the surface and what lies beneath it, presence and absence, the actual and the implied. The play of opposites gives the finished artworks a meditative quality, which is further enhanced by the blurring of the boundaries between painting and sculpture. Robert has studied art at TAFE, undergraduate and postgraduate levels. His work experience includes: exhibiting artist, workshop coordinator (formerly for Hands on Art, Inc., and for various primary and secondary schools since 1998); former tutor for Flying Arts, Inc., teacher for Adult Community Education, gallery employee, exhibitions' assistant and mural artist. In 1999 studies were competed for a Graduate Diploma of Arts (Visual Arts) at the Gippsland campus of Monash University, Victoria. In his role as a workshop coordinator/project artist Robert aims to develop participants' skills in an informative yet informal atmosphere. He is also available for work as an artist-in-residence and mural project coordinator. |
